EVERETT ASPHALT CAN BE DIFFICULT
In Everett, asphalt paving can be very tricky. The weather and other environmental condition have a real effect on the process. It takes a thorough knowledge of the materials used and the process involved to do the job right. For instance, knowing the precise composition of the asphalt used is essential to producing a high quality, long lasting paving project.
EVERETT ASPHALT CONTRACTOR THAT UNDERSTANDS THE BUSINESS
Asphalt itself is a mix of crushed rocks (called aggregates) and liquid asphalt (called asphalt cement, or "AC"). The crushed rock is blended in certain proportions with the asphalt cement. The aggregates give the paving mixture strength and durability, while the asphalt cement binds it all together. Still, not all asphalt is the same. The type of stone used and the way in which it is crushed can make a big difference. Rock that has high angularity, that is, a face that is rough and angular rather than rounded and smooth, yields more friction and skid resistance, producing a more durable product. Similarly, the type and amount of liquid asphalt (asphalt cement) used effects the overall strength and stability of the final product. Asphalt cement has some very unique physical properties. Most significantly, it is both sticky and elastic. Most of the asphalt cement used in paving projects is a by-product of petroleum crude oil; it is the heaviest part of the crude, left over after other elements are extracted for use in gasoline. At air temperature, it is extremely thick and hard to work with, but when heated it mixes well with the aggregates.
The asphalt mixture itself (the combination of asphalt cement and aggregates) comes in different grades. Generally, a softer mixture (less aggregate, more liquid asphalt) is used in colder climates while a harder mixture (more aggregate, less liquid asphalt) is suitable for warmer climates. Often, premium grades of asphalt also have polymers or other modifiers mixed in to give it extra durability for heavier traffic areas.
